Video Voyage

We created this video series to share the story of Guatemalan coffee with our partners around the world who roast and brew coffee. We hope that these nine informational videos will give you better insight into what goes into producing specialty coffee and the extraordinary amount of skill our producer partners show by delivering exceptional green coffee year after year.

This series highlights the coffee value chain from the nursery to the bags of quality exportable green coffee, featuring our teams in Huehuetenango and Fraijanes, and some of our producer partners from Huehuetenango. Please use it as an educational resource and share it as needed! We are happy to share the beauty and skill behind each cup of coffee through ‘Primavera Presents: A Video Voyage through Guatemalan Coffee.’

  • 1. Intro to the Coffee Industry & The Primavera Lab

Our first video introduces some key issues in today’s coffee industry. Our quality lab is the heart of our Guatemala-based operation, and we will see the lab featured in this first video.

  • 2. Pruning & Plant Health

Pruning and plant health are key to producers’ livelihoods, influencing both the productivity of a farm and the quality of the product a farm produces. This video will examine different pruning methods, the nutritional needs of coffee plants, and the management needed to mitigate pests that attack these plants.

  • 3. Maturation & Coffee Harvest

Harvesting techniques are important for the overall quality of a lot of coffee. Choosing the ripest coffee cherries from the tree requires a greater investment in training pickers, but will result in better quality and better prices for the farmer.

  • 4. Delivery of the Cherries

Once cherries are harvested, they must be processed. This video explores the next step in washed processing, delivery to a wet mill.

  • 5. Wet processing & Fermentation

This video examines the washed process, the most common way to process coffees in Guatemala. A special focus on fermentation will explain the role of microorganisms in the washed process.

  • 6. Honey & Natural Coffee Processing

Natural and honey processing are less common in Guatemala, but many producers have begun to experiment with them as a way to produce unique and high-quality coffee lots. This video will explain the steps in each of these processes.

  • 7. Drying Parchment Coffee

Coffee processing involves drying the coffee to ensure that it is fit to be exported. This video will explore the drying of washed, honey, and natural processed coffees.

  • 8. Dry Milling

Dry-milling is required for all coffees before they are ready for export. This process is done with specialized machinery before the coffee is bagged and marked for shipment. This video will explain the steps of dry milling.

  • 9. Exporting & Beyond

Exporting coffee is the process of moving coffee from origin to destination country, ensuring proper compliance with legal and health procedures. Our final video is an introduction to the process of exporting coffee via container ship, and the transaction that occurs between the seller and the buyer of the coffee.
